Dr. 凯伦Snedker has been at SPU for over 15 years. Her 教学 focuses on urban sociology, law, 无家可归, 和 criminal justice. She also teaches introductory sociology courses for the general curriculum. Prior to 教学 at SPU, Dr. Snedker spent several years as an NIH researcher at the University of Washington in the Psychosocial 和 社区 健康 department. She maintains her ties to the UW as a clinical assistant professor in the School of Nursing, affiliate faculty in sociology 和 a CSDE research affiliate. Prior to moving to 西雅图, Dr. Snedker lived in New York City 和 received her master’s 和 doctoral degrees in sociology from New York University.

Dr. Snedker’s research addresses mental health, 无家可归, 犯罪和暴力, 和 neighborhood effects. The scope of her published work is broad, 和 it has appeared in sociology, 地理位置, 人口统计学, 公共卫生, 和 crime academic outlets. Her current research areas are mental health 和 courts 和 无家可归.

Dr. Snedker 2018年的书, Therapeutic Justice: Crime, Treatment Courts 和 Mental Illness, 探讨了the intersection between mental health 和 the criminal justice system. The book provides a unique mixed method study of mental health courts within the framework of the larger trend towards problem-solving courts. Findings from this research have also been published in 社会 和 Mental 健康 并出现在 谈话.

Dr. Snedker is actively involved in 无家可归 和 tent cities in terms of research, 教学, 以及公众宣传. She recently conducted a tent census in the City of 西雅图 with an undergraduate student research team. This research project 和 its findings have been published in 西雅图时报《网易彩票app》全国公共广播电台. She has also worked on campus wide efforts to better engage our community around 无家可归. 读一本 纽约时报 article highlighting her involvement in Tent City 3. In collaboration with Dr. 詹妮弗·麦金尼, they designed an innovative research project while SPU hosted a homeless encampment known as Tent City 3.
